A new batch of yttrium-86 (Y-86) will be available soon through the U.S. Department of Energy Isotope Program (DOE IP). Specifically, the next irradiation date is set for June 25th, with Y-86 shipping later that day. Due to its positron-emitting properties, the isotope holds promise as a PET imaging agent and as a theranostic pair to yttrium-90 for cancer treatment.
Yttrium-86 (half-life of 14.74 hours to strontium-86) is produced using the DOE’s Brookhaven Linac Isotope Producer (BLIP) located at Brookhaven National Laboratory via proton irradiation of a Sr-86 target. The Y-86 product has a radionuclidic purity of >98% and is sold as Yttrium (III) in 0.05-0.5 N HCl.
Yttrium-86 is offered on an as-needed basis by the DOE IP and can be ordered in millicurie quantities. We recommend that interested parties submit requests for quotes as soon as possible to reserve material.
